In 2018, the Ibis hotel in Iquique was shaken by a tragic event when a 60-year-old man, Hernán Felipe Cruz Bedón from Ecuador, fell from the sixth floor. Hernán had just arrived in Chile, crossing into the country only the day before through Colchane, marking the beginning of what should have been a new adventure.
Hernán, who had checked into the hotel on the same day of his arrival, was looking forward to his stay in Chile. However, his journey took a heartbreaking turn. The local police, upon arriving at the scene, were faced with the somber task of identifying him. They confirmed his identity through fingerprint analysis, a process that linked him back to his home in Ecuador.
Deputy Commissary Rodrigo López from the Homicide Brigade shared the preliminary findings with the media. He explained that Hernán’s death appeared to be the result of severe injuries consistent with a fall from a significant height. The police are treating the incident seriously, and while they initially pointed towards an accidental fall, further investigations will determine if there were any other factors involved.
The community of Iquique, along with the hotel staff, are left in shock and mourning. Hernán’s unexpected death serves as a stark reminder of life’s fragility, especially for those far from home. As the authorities continue their inquiries, friends and family in Ecuador await more answers about the circumstances surrounding his tragic end.
